Beyond The Bombs: A Holistic Approach To Stopping Fish Bombing

The opening phases of Stop Fish Bombing’s plans have been primarily working with and developing technology that could accurately detect and report on fish bombing activities in real time. We have reduced fish bombing in areas covered by our arrays by 80% and started development of IRPS2 that will provide mobile sensors to follow the bombers. Now that our Integrated Reef Protection System has us on the path to a technological solution, we have begun to turn our focus on to a more holistic approach.

This means we need to spend more time and energy on connecting with other NGOs, local community leaders, educators, and Government officials to both educate on the problem of fish bombing and that the IRPS can be a huge step towards eradicating the bombing.

To that end over the past few months SFB USA and SFB MY have been conducting more outreach.

Stop Fish Bombing USA and SFB Malaysia will be speaking at #OiAmericas 2023, in San Diego, the heart of the new blue economy!

Register now to attend our session.

The European Commission – Community Action for Fish-Bomb-Free Semporna Seas, Sabah, was successful and the contract is due to be signed by the end of this month, with a start in January 2023.  It’s a 4-year programme with Semporna Island Project as lead and WWF as co-applicant. As the title implies, the main focus is on Community, but technology / monitoring fish bombs is also included. The budget will contribute to fish bomb data analysis and cover field staff/boats to maintain existing sensors.
