Sabah Increases Patrols To Tackle Illegal Fishing Activities

The Sabah government will deploy more patrol teams from the Fisheries Department to curb unsustainable fishing activities in state waters.

State Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Minister Datuk Jamawi Jaafar said his ministry is aware of threats to fish stocks following reports of fish bombing and the use of underwater lamps.

"We are aware of this and there has been a decline in fish stocks. During a previous briefing with the Fisheries Department, we activated enforcement at the officer level to ensure they remain on the ground.

"I was informed that in December alone, five arrests against fish bombing and trawling were made.

"This will not stop there; we will continue enforcement from time to time," he told the media after delivering his New Year's message at Wisma Pertanian here.
