Stop Fish Bombing At Oceanology International Americas 2023

"Stop Fish Bombing is NOT Mission: Impossible” was presented in the “End Use Case Study” Session of the Oceanology International 2023 Conference in San Diego 14 - 16 February. Terence Lim, Executive Director SFB Malaysia traveled 28 hours to join Clark Dunson SFB Technical Director and Dieter Rudolph SFB USA Executive Director in San Diego. Our Case Study results - an 80% reduction in fish bombing where our arrays are deployed in Semporna Malaysian Borneo gained attention and applause. Most in the audience did not know what fish bombing is and how destructive this practice that destroys the fish nurseries reduces is.

The conference Exhibition Hall was filled with vendors demonstrating new technologies. This provided us the opportunity to discuss our technology needs. Our fixed arrays successfully reduced fish bombing in the areas monitored, but to eradicate fish bombing we also need mobile sensors deployable on boats, buoys and USVs (Unmanned Surface Vessels) to fill in shadow zones and follow bombers as they migrate. We identified a number of promising technologies that we plan to pursue.
